An LED tunnel light is a sealed luminaire, with LED modules on a die-cast aluminium heat sink, tunnel-specific optics, a dimmable driver and surge protection, mounted on tunnel walls or ceilings, that lights road tunnels and underpasses so drivers can adapt from daylight and see obstacles at speed. Ask three things first: what luminance each zone, above all the entrance threshold, must reach by day and night, which light distribution and control the design uses, and what protection against water, impact, cleaning and surges the luminaire has.

The FHWA European road lighting scanning tour report cites CIE 88 (1990): tunnel lighting should let traffic approach, pass through and leave a tunnel day and night at the design speed with safety and comfort no less than on the adjacent open road. It describes the threshold-zone lighting level as the main design difficulty, controlled by a luminance meter in integrated systems, since too little light slows traffic or causes crashes and too much wastes installation and maintenance cost. It reports Dutch threshold luminances of 200–250 cd/m² at a 120 km/h design speed using counter-beam lighting (symmetrical lighting is higher), a Belgian pilot with threshold luminance of 400 cd/m² for both counter-beam and symmetric systems, and daylight penetration up to 70 m into the tunnel; Swiss experts noted large trucks can block counter-beam light and create shadows. Editorial note: threshold-zone requirements depend on approach speed, traffic, portal orientation and outside luminance; ask the lighting designer for zone-by-zone luminance targets and the luminaire's photometric files to show they are met with maintenance factors.
Give the supplier the tunnel length and cross-section, design speed and traffic, zone luminance targets by day and night, mounting position and height, light distribution (counter-beam, symmetric), control system (luminance meter, DALI, 1–10 V), supply voltage, surge level, ambient temperature, cleaning method and IP/IK needs, emergency lighting interface and quantities.

Check efficacy, protection and surge rating
ZGSM's tunnel and underpass LED luminaire range is offered from 40 to 240 W at 125–165 lm/W, with IP66 and IK10 ratings, 10 kV surge protection in the driver and an optional extra 10 kV surge protective device, CRI above 70 (above 80 optional), −40 to +50 °C operation, adjustable mounting brackets and controls including 1–10 V and DALI dimming, photocells, motion sensors and Zigbee or LoRa. Editorial calculation: a 200 W fitting at 150 lm/W emits about 30,000 lm before optical and maintenance losses; threshold zones needing hundreds of cd/m² need rows of such fittings at close spacing, so ask for the lighting calculation rather than comparing wattage alone. [2][1]
Signify's data sheet for one TunLite LED GEN2 tunnel light (BGP286, June 2026) shows the detail a full specification carries: 172 W, 23,240 lm and 138 lm/W at 4,000 K and CRI 70, with ±7% flux and ±10% power tolerance; 220–240 V, power factor 0.91, inrush 53 A for 0.3 ms and four fittings per 16 A type-B breaker; DALI dimming to 10%; surge protection to 10 kV differential and 10 kV common mode; IP66, IK08 (5 J) and flat glass cover; −40 to +50 °C ambient; lumen maintenance L95 at 100,000 h median useful life to EN-IEC 62722-2-1, with control-gear failure of 7.5% at 75,000 h and 10% at 100,000 h; 88° × 157° beam spread; 7.8 kg and 67 × 422 × 341 mm. Editorial calculation: four 172 W fittings on one 16 A breaker draw 688 W, about 3.4 A at 220 V and 0.91 power factor (688 ÷ (220 × 0.91)), well under 16 A; the breaker limit comes from the 53 A inrush, not running current. [3]

Set threshold switching and dimming before counting LED savings
A 2020 study in Energies by Doulos and co-authors calculated the L20 luminance of the access zone at eleven existing tunnels, using the traffic-weighted method of CR 14380, and programmed a new switching control for the tunnels' SCADA system. Annual energy use was estimated from eight days of signals from the eleven L20 meters and compared with scenarios in which the existing lighting was retrofitted with LED luminaires. [4]
Re-tuning the switching of the existing installation, at no extra cost, saved between 11% and 54% of energy depending on the tunnel. With LED luminaires, savings ranged from 57%, for the existing threshold-zone luminance demand with 10% step dimming, to 85%, for the newly calculated luminance demand with continuous dimming. The authors trace the excess to lighting systems that are "usually over-dimensioned" because lighting calculation tools are absent at the initial stage of tunnel design. [4]
Editorial calculation: the two LED scenarios differ by 28 percentage points (85% − 57%), and they differ in luminance demand and dimming method, not in the luminaire. Ask the designer for the threshold luminance basis and the supplier for the dimming steps its driver supports.
