Toggle Plate

The toggle plate is a replaceable sacrificial component in jaw crushers that connects the movable jaw to the frame. It functions as a mechanical fuse designed to fracture under extreme crushing forces, preventing catastrophic damage to more expensive crusher components like the pitman, bearings, and frame. Typically made from cast iron or manganese steel, it absorbs shock loads and ensures operational safety by failing predictably when uncrushable material enters the crushing chamber.

The toggle plate operates on the principle of controlled mechanical failure. During normal operation, it transmits crushing force from the movable jaw to the frame. When an overload condition occurs (e.g., tramp iron or excessive feed), the stress concentration at the designed weak points (often notches or reduced sections) causes the plate to fracture, disconnecting the force transmission path and protecting the main crusher structure. This sacrificial failure mechanism allows for quick replacement and minimal downtime compared to repairing major components.
