MOQ disputes kill more supplier relationships at the quoting stage than price does. What an MOQ Actually Pays For
An MOQ is not a test of your seriousness and rarely just a profit lever. It is the point where a production run stops losing money. Three cost blocks sit behind almost every minimum a factory quotes you:
- Changeover and setup. Switching a line from another customer's product to yours consumes hours of skilled labor and machine downtime: mounting and heating a mold, writing and proving a CNC program, building fixtures, loading component feeders, purging the previous material. These costs are identical whether the run that follows is 200 pieces or 20,000, so small runs carry a brutal per-unit setup burden.
- Upstream material minimums. The factory faces MOQs of its own. A resin compounder will not match a custom color below a minimum batch of masterbatch. Fabric mills dye in lot sizes. Counterintuitively, the supplier who refuses to budge is often the one you want.
