Precision ceramic components serve where metals wear, corrode, conduct, or deform: semiconductor handling arms and rings, insulating spacers, pump seals, wire-drawing guides, medical instruments, and vacuum feedthroughs. Common materials include alumina from 95 to 99.8 percent purity, zirconia for toughness, silicon carbide and silicon nitride for extreme wear and heat, and aluminum nitride for thermal conductivity with insulation. Parts are pressed or injection-molded, sintered, then diamond-ground and lapped to micron tolerances, with flatness and surface finish often specified in fractions of a micron.
Working Principle
Ceramic powders with binders are shaped by pressing, extrusion, or injection molding, then sintered near their melting range where grains densify. Because sintering shrinks parts around 15-20 percent, precision comes from post-sinter diamond grinding, lapping, and polishing against dimensioned drawings.
