Read the EN 10169 corrosion and UV classes

Tata Steel, announcing its products' ratings under the 2022 revision of EN 10169, explains that RC5+ is the highest corrosion class and requires at least four years of weathering at a C5 exposure site with satisfactory results, resisting blistering, coating damage and edge peel to less than 2 mm. Ruv5, the highest UV class, requires at least four years at a UV exposure site, with gloss retention above 80% after each test and colour change below 3 ΔE after natural weathering. [1]

Tata Steel attributes part of its products' performance to the metallic coating under the paint as well as the paint system. [1] ArcelorMittal's Granite Silky Shine facade product, for comparison, is a 50 µm paint system rated up to RC4 for corrosion under EN 10169 and RUV4 for UV under EN 10169-2. [2]

Editorial note: a class is a property of the tested paint system on its tested substrate; ask the supplier for the EN 10169 classification report for the exact system, thickness and metallic coating you are buying, not a generic claim.

Give the supplier the end use (indoor furniture, appliance, panel, outdoor cladding), required classes, colour and gloss, paint system and thickness for top and reverse sides, metallic coating, steel grade and thickness, coil width, inner diameter and weight, forming method, and test reports needed.

Choose an indoor or outdoor paint system

ArcelorMittal's Estetic Mat range for interiors uses a 25 µm paint system, half the 50 µm of its Granite Silky Shine facade product, and is described as having excellent formability, high impact resistance and stain-resistant, easy-to-clean surfaces. [3] [2]

For aggressive and very wet interiors, ArcelorMittal's Estetic Clean combines pre-painted steel with a co-laminated polyester film certified for food contact, and a pre-painted back coat for insulated panels. [4]

ECCA, the European Coil Coating Association, describes the coil coating process as roller-applied paint after pretreatment, increasingly no-rinse, with ovens curing the paint in seconds by gas, induction, IR/NIR or UV/EB, and oxidisers destroying more than 99% of collected solvent VOCs. [5] Editorial note: because coil-coated steel is formed after painting, ask for formability results such as T-bend and impact tests on the paint system you will bend.
