INDUSTRY COMPONENT

Fluxing Agents

Specialized powder used in continuous casting to control heat transfer, prevent oxidation, and lubricate the mold.

Component Specifications

Definition
Fluxing agents, specifically continuous casting mold powder, are granular or powdered materials applied to the molten steel surface in the mold during continuous casting. They form a liquid slag layer that regulates heat extraction, prevents reoxidation of the steel, absorbs non-metallic inclusions, and provides lubrication between the solidifying steel shell and the copper mold to ensure smooth strand withdrawal and surface quality.
Working Principle
The powder melts on contact with molten steel, creating a liquid slag layer. This layer controls heat transfer from the steel to the mold, preventing rapid solidification and cracks. It acts as a barrier against atmospheric oxygen, absorbs alumina and other inclusions, and lubricates the mold-strand interface via a crystalline or glassy slag film, reducing friction and sticking.
Materials
Typically composed of CaO-SiO2-Al2O3-based oxides with additions of CaF2, Na2O, K2O, Li2O, MgO, and carbon (coke, graphite) to control melting rate and viscosity. May include B2O3 or MnO for specific properties.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the primary function of mold powder in continuous casting?

To control heat transfer, prevent oxidation, absorb inclusions, and lubricate the mold for smooth strand withdrawal and high-quality steel surface.

How does carbon content affect mold powder performance?

Carbon acts as a melting rate controller; higher carbon slows melting, ensuring gradual slag formation and consistent lubrication throughout the casting process.
