Technical details and manufacturing context for Cylinder (Hydraulic)

Definition
Within a Lift Actuator system, the hydraulic cylinder serves as the primary force-generating component that extends and retracts to raise and lower loads. It consists of a cylindrical barrel, piston, piston rod, and seals that contain pressurized hydraulic fluid to create controlled linear movement for lifting applications. The cylinder is available in bore diameters from 40 to 320 mm (ISO 6020-2), stroke lengths from 50 to 2000 mm (custom up to 6000 mm), and piston rod diameters from 20 to 200 mm (ISO 6020-2). Operating pressure ranges from 10 to 35 MPa (ISO 3320), and operating temperature from -20 to 80°C. Piston speed is typically 0.1 to 1.5 m/s. Cushioning is adjustable as standard, with fixed cushioning optional. Seal materials are NBR or PU, depending on fluid and wear requirements. Mounting types include flange, clevis, and trunnion (ISO 6020-2). Weight varies from 15 to 500 kg depending on bore, stroke, and mounting. Surface treatment includes chrome-plated rod (hard chrome 20–30 µm) and painted or hard anodized barrel. Materials on file include carbon steel, stainless steel, and chrome-plated steel. These values are directory reference ranges; verify model-specific specifications with the legal manufacturer or supplier before procurement.
Working Principle
Hydraulic fluid is pumped into one side of the cylinder, creating pressure that pushes against the piston surface area. This pressure generates force that moves the piston rod in a linear direction. Reversing the fluid flow direction causes the cylinder to retract. The force output is determined by the pressure and piston area (Force = Pressure × Area).

Reliability & Engineering Risk Analysis

Failure Mode & Root Cause
Seal degradation
Cause: Contamination ingress, chemical incompatibility, excessive heat, or improper installation leading to fluid leaks and pressure loss.
Rod scoring/pitting
Cause: Abrasive particles in hydraulic fluid, inadequate rod wiper seals, or misalignment causing accelerated wear and potential cylinder binding.
Maintenance Indicators
  • Visible hydraulic fluid leakage around rod seals or cylinder body
  • Audible knocking or scraping sounds during cylinder operation indicating internal damage or misalignment
Engineering Tips
  • Implement strict fluid cleanliness protocols (ISO 4406 standards) and regular fluid analysis to prevent abrasive wear and contamination-related failures.
  • Ensure proper cylinder alignment during installation and use rod boots/protectors in harsh environments to prevent rod surface damage and seal contamination.

Indicative industry ranges for design and RFQ preparation. Confirm the exact figures and applicable standard with the manufacturer before specifying.
