A floor drain collects water and spills at floor level and passes them to the drainage system through a trap that keeps sewer odours out. In food and process areas it must also be easy to clean and strong enough for trolleys and forklifts. Ask three things first: how much water the drain must take and through what outlet, what water seal and trap the building and hygiene rules require, and what loads, material and cleaning regime the floor will see.

Inoxsystem's hygienic floor drains have square tops of 200 mm or 300 mm and outlets of Ø75 or Ø110 mm, horizontal or vertical, with Ø63 mm on request; ultra-low-profile versions add Ø50 and Ø63 mm outlets. The catalogue gives a water seal depth of 50 mm in line with UNI EN 1253-1, and 20 mm on low-profile (R) and some ultra-low-profile versions. Listed flow rates are 60–135 l/min with the removable odour-trap kit fitted and 120–340 l/min without it on the standard and low-profile models, and 50–125 l/min with kit and 80–340 l/min without on ultra-low-profile models. Editorial calculation: 135 l/min is 2.25 l/s and 340 l/min about 5.7 l/s (÷ 60); the kit, which forms the odour trap, cuts flow on the 300 mm, Ø110 mm model from 340 to 135 l/min. [1]
KESSEL lists its Practicus floor drain, made of polypropylene, with a drainage capacity of 1.8 l/s, a horizontal or vertical outlet in nominal sizes DN 50, DN 70 and DN 100, an odour trap included, and articles in load class K 3 or L 15 to EN 1253-1. [3] Editorial calculation: 1.8 l/s is 108 l/min, within the 60–135 l/min Inoxsystem lists for its drains with the trap kit fitted. [3][1]
Editorial note: a drain without its trap kit loses the water seal; size the drain for the flow with the trap fitted unless another trap is installed downstream.
Give the supplier the peak water flow and source (washdown, CIP, spills), outlet size and direction, connection to pipework, required water seal and trap type, floor build-up height available, expected loads (foot traffic, trolleys, forklifts), grating type, material grade, hygienic design requirements and any approvals or standards.

Set the load capacity, material and cleanability
The same catalogue gives a load capacity of 1,000 kg concentrated and 10,000 kg distributed for each model, and states the drains are made of grade 304 stainless steel with grade 316 on request. Each drain has a removable filter basket and a removable odour trap (an internal pipe or a cup-shaped trap on ultra-low-profile versions) with gaskets; to clean, both are removed so wastewater flows through, and the catalogue recommends refilling the drain with water after cleaning to stop odours returning. Ultra-low-profile versions are listed with installation heights from 105 to 155 mm, against 140–265 mm for standard and low-profile versions with the same top sizes, and a blind cover with O-ring is offered on request. [2][1]
KESSEL's Ferrofix range is made of stainless steel grade 1.4301, with 1.4571 on request, for uses such as food processing and swimming pools; its drain bodies come with a vertical or horizontal outlet, a press sealing flange, an odour trap and an outlet spigot for SML pipe, and its slotted channel meets load class L 15, which KESSEL gives as 1.5 t. [4] For the Practicus drain, KESSEL reports Fraunhofer sound measurements of ≥ 18 dB(A) to DIN 4109 and offers Fire-Kit and Quick-Fit fire protection inserts rated R 120. [3]
