Drill pipe is the heavy seamless steel tubing of a drill string: it turns the bit and carries drilling fluid down to it, in joints connected by threaded tool joints welded to upset pipe ends. Ask three things first: what size, grade and length range the well or bore needs, which connection and tool joint the rig and string use, and how the pipe body, welds and threads are inspected.

OSHA's oil and gas well drilling glossary defines drill pipe as the heavy seamless tubing used to rotate the bit and circulate the drilling fluid, with 30 ft joints coupled by tool joints; its tripping guidance describes pulling and setting back stands of drill pipe, supported in the rotary table by slips and lifted by elevators latched below the tool joint. Tejas Tubular, a US drill pipe maker, lists its API drill pipe in outside diameters from 2⅜ to 6⅝ in, grades E75, X95, G105 and S135, Ranges 1, 2 and 3, with standard API rotary shouldered connections and options of make-and-break and hardbanding; its HDD drill pipe runs from 1.660 to 6⅝ in in the same grades, 5 to 32 ft long, with IF, NC and drilling-rig-maker-specific connections. Editorial calculation: a 3,000 m well drilled with 30 ft (9.144 m) joints needs about 3,000 / 9.144 ≈ 328 joints of drill pipe, less the length taken by the bottomhole assembly. Well depth and joint length are assumed examples; order by the length range and string design for your well.
Give the supplier the well or bore type and depth, hole size, string design loads (tension, torque, collapse and burst), required grade, size and nominal weight, length range, connection type and tool joint dimensions, hardbanding type, sour-service or other environment requirements, inspection and certification required (API 5DP monogram, third-party inspection), and coating and thread protection for shipping.

Tejas describes its process: seamless tubing from qualified mills inspected for dimensions and chemistry; ends hot forged (upset) to give the wall-thickness transition for tool joints; quench-and-temper or normalize-and-temper heat treatment; ultrasonic weld-line and electromagnetic inspection of every pipe; straightening; turning and facing before welding; tool joints friction (inertia) welded to the pipe body with each weld inspected by ultrasonic and magnetic particle testing for API 5DP compliance; CNC-cut API rotary shouldered connections; and automated hardbanding. Better Petroleum Equipment, a drill pipe supplier linked to this page, describes a similar sequence of alloy steel (it cites AISI 4130 and 4140), quench and temper, seamless pipe body, separately machined and threaded tool joints with phosphate or copper plating against galling, welding, ultrasonic, magnetic particle and hardness testing, and tensile, pressure and fatigue testing.
