A foot pedal, or foot switch, lets an operator start, stop or vary a machine function with the foot while both hands stay on the work. Ask three things first: what happens if the pedal is pressed by accident, since that decides the guard and whether a latch or emergency stop is needed; whether the pedal switches an electrical contact, an air signal or a variable output; and where it will sit, since washdown, dust and floor traffic set the IP rating and housing.

For mechanical power presses, OSHA's 29 CFR 1910.217 requires the pedal mechanism of a foot pedal (treadle) to be protected against unintended operation from falling or moving objects or accidental stepping, a non-slip pad firmly attached to the pedal, return springs of the compression type operating on a rod or guided in a hole or tube or designed to prevent coils interleaving if they break, and an enclosed path for any pedal counterweight. It applies the same protection rule to foot-operated tripping controls, and where foot control is offered the selection between hand and foot control must be separate from the stroking selector and able to be supervised by the employer. Herga says of its heavy-duty footswitches that “most of them have an additional guard option or are compatible with our general guards”, and offers versions with a manual release giving a pressure point and two-step switching, a pedal lock (detent) for greater security, and an emergency stop on the rod or cover. [3] Editorial note: the OSHA text is a US rule for mechanical power presses; for other machines and markets, ask the machine builder which standard governs the foot control and whether a guarded or two-step pedal is required.
Give the supplier the machine and function controlled, whether the pedal is momentary, latching, two-step or variable, the number of pedals, guard and emergency-stop needs, the electrical load (voltage, current, AC or DC, contact form) or air pressure and tubing, cable length and connector, IP rating for the location, operating temperature, housing material, approvals required, and quantity.

Herga's industrial foot switches show typical electric ratings: light-duty OEM switches rated 6 A at 250 V AC with changeover or normally-open contacts and −20 to +80 °C, and light-industrial switches rated 3 A at 250 V AC with IPX7 or IPX8 sealing. Heavy-duty die-cast aluminium and modular multi-pedal switches are IPX2 with IP67 optional, and foot potentiometers give 5 kΩ or 10 kΩ or a variable voltage output, and USB foot switches are also offered. Herga's pneumatic foot switches send a puff of air through PVC tubing to a remote air switch, so no electricity reaches the pedal; it recommends them for wet environments and medical use because they keep water and electricity apart and are easy to clean. Its Mistral industrial foot air valve is rated to 10 bar at −5 to +50 °C.
