Technical details and manufacturing context for Transmission/Compound

Definition
The Transmission/Compound in a drawworks is a critical power transmission component. It receives rotational power from the prime mover (typically an engine or electric motor) and, through a system of gears, shafts, and clutches, modifies the speed and torque to the required levels for the drum shaft. This enables the drawworks to perform its core functions of hoisting, lowering, and holding heavy loads (such as drill strings) with precise control. The assembly is designed to handle rated power in the range of 500–2000 kW, with input speeds typically between 1000 and 1500 r/min. Gear ratios are selectable from 5 to 20 to match drum speed requirements, and output torque can reach 50–200 kN·m. Efficiency is high, typically 95–98%, reducing power loss. The operating temperature range is -20 to 60 °C, and lubrication pressure is maintained at 0.2–0.4 MPa to ensure proper oil film in bearings and gears. Noise level at 1 m distance is ≤85 dB(A) per ISO 3746, and vibration severity is ≤4.5 mm/s per ISO 10816. Materials commonly used include alloy steel and cast iron, with material grade 42CrMo per GB/T 3077 for gears and shafts. The assembly weighs between 3000 and 8000 kg, and its maximum envelope for skid mounting is 2000×1500×1200 mm. These parameters are reference ranges; actual values must be confirmed with the manufacturer for specific models and applications. The transmission/compound is a key interface between the prime mover and the drum, and its proper selection and maintenance are essential for safe and efficient drawworks operation.
Working Principle
The prime mover provides input rotation, which is transmitted through an input shaft into the transmission/compound housing. Inside, a gear train, which may include compound gear sets for multiple speed/torque ratios, alters the rotational speed and multiplies torque. The modified power is then output via a shaft connected to the drawworks drum. Clutches and brakes integrated into or associated with the assembly allow for engagement, disengagement, and controlled stopping of the power flow. This enables precise control of hoisting and lowering operations.
