Chain transfer or roller transfer: load, lift stroke and stop positions

Interroll's PM 9730 chain transfer is "used for 90° change of direction for horizontal transport of full and empty pallets" with two chain runs of duplex precision roller chain in plastic guides, an electric parallel lift on ball bearings, a deflection radius of only 43 mm for compact transfer, and an integrated tensioning station. Its data sheet gives 500 kg maximum load, 30 mm maximum stroke, two stop positions, chain speed 0.1 to 0.5 m/s, a 0.37-1.5 kW chain drive and 0.37-0.55 kW lift drive at 400 V, 60 mm rollers, conveying widths of 860, 1,060 or 1,295 mm and a 1,450 mm module length. The PM 9732 roller transfer does the same 90° change on rollers lifted by eccentric cams: 1,500 kg maximum load, 60 mm maximum stroke, three stop positions, 0.1 to 0.5 m/s, 89 mm rollers with 3 mm walls, and a 1,500 mm module length. Both are rated for +5 to +45 °C, with deep-freeze versions on request, and neither for incline or decline. [2]

Editorial comparison: the roller transfer carries three times the load (1,500 ÷ 500) and lifts twice as far (60 ÷ 30 mm) as the chain transfer in the same widths, so check the heaviest loaded pallet against each module, not against the straight conveyor's rating. [1] [2]

Give the supplier the pallet type and size, bottom-board direction relative to each conveyor, heaviest loaded pallet, throughput per hour at each junction, conveyor heights and widths, which junction types are needed (transfer, turntable, car, lift), stop positions, ambient temperature (including freezers), drive voltage and controls interface.

Turntable, transfer car or lift: matching the module to the layout

Inbelts describes pallet conveyor systems for loads "typically weighing between 500 to 2000 kg per pallet" and lists the junction modules by use: a turntable conveyor "rotates pallets to change travel direction" for 90° or 180° line changes; a transfer car or shuttle conveyor moves pallets between multiple lanes or lines, for multi-line systems and AS/RS; a lift/lower conveyor (vertical transfer unit) moves pallets between floors or levels; and accumulation conveyors buffer pallets using zone control. It lists sensors for pallet presence, pallet stops and guides, and a PLC control panel managing zones and speed among the components. [3]

Editorial note: a chain or roller transfer keeps the pallet's orientation while changing its travel direction by 90°, whereas a turntable rotates the pallet itself; which one fits depends on whether the next conveyor needs the pallet's boards running with or across its travel. [1] [3]
