Technical details and manufacturing context for Safety Relief Valve

Definition
The Safety Relief Valve is a critical safety component installed on the Deoxygenation Chamber, a vessel used in industrial processes to remove dissolved oxygen from liquids. Its primary function is to protect the chamber from overpressure conditions that could lead to catastrophic failure. The valve remains closed during normal operation, but when the internal pressure exceeds the valve's set pressure, it automatically opens to release excess fluid, thereby reducing the pressure to a safe level. Once the pressure drops below the reseat pressure, the valve closes again, ensuring the process continues safely. This valve is designed to operate within a set pressure range of 0.1 to 1.6 MPa, with an operating pressure range of 1.0 to 1.6 MPa, and is suitable for temperatures from -40°C to 120°C. It features a nominal diameter of 15 to 100 mm and is constructed with materials such as Stainless Steel 316, Spring Steel, and PTFE seals. The valve body can be made of carbon steel or stainless steel (WCB/CF8/CF8M), and the seat material can be PTFE or PEEK, depending on chemical compatibility. The valve's accuracy is ±5% of set pressure, and it has a leakage rate of ≤0.05 mL/min at 90% of set pressure. It offers a flow capacity of 10 to 500 m³/h at 10% overpressure, with a response time of ≤0.1 seconds for full lift. The valve weighs between 5 and 50 kg, depending on size and material, and has an ingress protection rating of IP65 for outdoor installation. All parameters are reference values that must be verified for the specific model and application. The valve complies with relevant standards such as ISO 4126-1, which serve as procurement and verification references. It is essential to confirm model-specific values and standards with the legal manufacturer or supplier before installation.
Working Principle
The valve remains closed under normal operating pressure due to the spring force acting on the valve disc. When the internal pressure exceeds the predetermined set point, the force on the disc overcomes the spring force, causing the valve to open and release fluid. This discharge continues until the pressure drops below the reseat pressure, at which point the spring force closes the valve again. The set pressure can be adjusted within the range of 0.1 to 1.6 MPa, and the valve is designed to respond within 0.1 seconds to prevent overpressure damage.

Reliability & Engineering Risk Analysis

Failure Mode & Root Cause
Sticking/Seizing
Cause: Corrosion, fouling, or debris accumulation preventing proper disc movement, often due to process contamination, improper material selection, or inadequate maintenance intervals.
Leakage (In-Service or External)
Cause: Worn or damaged seating surfaces from erosion/corrosion, improper installation torque, thermal cycling causing distortion, or foreign material preventing full closure.
Maintenance Indicators
  • Visible leakage or weeping from valve discharge during normal operation
  • Audible hissing or continuous flow noise when valve should be closed
Engineering Tips
  • Implement regular bench testing and inspection per ASME/API standards to verify set pressure, seat tightness, and functional integrity before reinstallation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the set pressure range of this safety relief valve?

The set pressure range is 0.1 to 1.6 MPa, adjustable within that range. Always verify the exact set pressure for your application with the manufacturer.

What materials are used in the construction of this valve?

The valve uses Stainless Steel 316 for wetted parts, Spring Steel for the spring, and PTFE seals. The body can be carbon steel or stainless steel (WCB/CF8/CF8M), and the seat material can be PTFE or PEEK, depending on chemical compatibility. Confirm material suitability for your process media.

What standards does this valve comply with?

The valve references ISO 5208 for flange dimensions and leakage testing, and ISO 4126-1 for set pressure and flow capacity. These standards are procurement references; they do not guarantee certification. Verify compliance with the manufacturer for your specific model.

How does the valve protect the deoxygenation chamber?

The valve automatically opens when internal pressure exceeds the set point, releasing fluid to reduce pressure. It closes when pressure drops below the reseat pressure. This prevents overpressure conditions that could cause catastrophic failure, ensuring operational safety.
