Technical details and manufacturing context for Ductile Iron Casting

Definition
Ductile iron casting, also known as spheroidal graphite iron (SGI) or nodular iron, is used in automotive components, pipe fittings, pumps, valves, and heavy machinery where strength and toughness are critical. It is specified by material grade (e.g., EN-GJS-400-15) and casting dimensions, with grades distinguished by tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation. The spheroidal graphite structure imparts ductility, making it a cost-effective alternative to steel castings.
Working Principle
During solidification, magnesium or cerium is added to molten iron to cause graphite to precipitate as spheres instead of flakes. These spheres act as crack arresters, enhancing ductility and toughness. The resulting microstructure provides a combination of high strength and good machinability.
Common Materials
