Technical details and manufacturing context for Aluminum Die Casting

Definition
Aluminum die castings are widely used in automotive, aerospace, electronics, and consumer goods for components like engine blocks, housings, brackets, and heat sinks. They are specified by alloy grade (e.g., A380, A383), dimensional tolerances, surface finish, and mechanical properties. Grades differ in composition, affecting strength, corrosion resistance, and castability. The process yields parts with excellent dimensional accuracy, smooth surfaces, and high production rates, making it ideal for high-volume applications.
Working Principle
Molten aluminum alloy is forced into a hardened steel die at high pressure (typically 1,500–25,000 psi) and high speed, filling the cavity rapidly. The metal solidifies quickly under pressure, reproducing the die's intricate details. After solidification, the die opens and the part is ejected, ready for trimming or secondary operations.
Common Materials
A380 (Al-Si-Cu), A383 (Al-Si-Cu), A360 (Al-Si), A413 (Al-Si), ADC12 (Japanese equivalent)
