Choose the standard and grade for the joint

ASTM A307 covers carbon steel bolts and studs from 1/4 in to 4 in in two grades: Grade A bolts, studs and threaded rod with a minimum tensile strength of 60 ksi for general applications, and Grade B threaded rod with 60–100 ksi tensile for flanged joints in piping systems with cast-iron flanges; former Grade C is replaced by ASTM F1554 Grade 36. It names ASTM A563 for suitable nuts. [1]

ASTM A193 covers alloy and stainless steel bolting materials for pressure vessels, valves, flanges and fittings in high-temperature or high-pressure service, and ASTM states: "Several grades are covered, including ferritic steels and austenitic stainless steels designated B5, B8, and so forth." Grades are chosen by design, service conditions, mechanical properties and high-temperature behaviour; it refers to A320 for low-temperature and A354 for lower-range high-temperature bolting. [2]

ASTM F1554 covers straight, bent, headed and headless anchor bolts in three strength grades and also all-thread rod for anchoring structural supports to concrete foundations, with zinc coating requirements and listed nuts and washers. ISO 898-1 specifies the mechanical and physical properties of carbon and alloy steel bolts, screws and studs tested at 10–35 °C, with ISO metric coarse threads M1.6 to M39, and excludes weldability, corrosion resistance and fatigue requirements. Editorial calculation: 60 ksi ≈ 414 MPa and 100 ksi ≈ 689 MPa; 1/4 in to 4 in is about 6.4 mm to 102 mm. [1]

Give the supplier the standard and grade or property class, diameter and thread pitch, length and tolerance, quantity, material certificate requirement, finish and coating thickness, matching nut and washer grade, marking, packaging and any test requirements.

Fix the size, length, material and finish

Haiyan Bolt lists full-thread rods, double-end rods and one-end rods to DIN 975, DIN 976 and ASME/ANSI B18.31.1M, in carbon or stainless steel, in grades A2-70, A4-70, A4-80, 4.8, 8.8, 10.9, 12.9, B7 and B8 and ASTM A307 Grade A, A193 B7 and F1554 Grades 36, 55 and 105, sizes M3 to M72 in 30–3,000 mm lengths, with zinc-plated, black, nickel, chrome or polished finishes; it states its B7 rod is made of AISI 4140 or 4142 alloy steel. [5]

Ningbo Fastenwell lists threaded rods in B7, B7M, B8, B8M, DIN 975 and DIN 976 up to 3 m long, describing diameter and length as the two critical specifications, and says A193 B7 performance is closer to SAE Grade 5 than Grade 8. [6]

Editorial calculation: 3,000 mm is about 9.8 ft; M72 is about 2.83 in diameter. [5]
