Operator-station mounting enclosure: the pedestal box that carries an HMI, pushbuttons and an E-stop at the machine

At a machine station the operator works through a small enclosure on a pedestal or support arm: a touch panel in its front, a row of pushbuttons and an emergency stop beneath, cables entering through glands from the pedestal tube, and terminal blocks behind the door. The enclosure is chosen less by its volume than by its front: the panel cut-out has to match the HMI and the sheet thickness its clamps can grip, the 22 mm holes have to leave room for actuators and the E-stop legend, and in washdown areas the box shape itself has to shed water.

Cutting the front: a 204.5 × 159.5 mm opening for a 7-inch HMI in a 1.6–5 mm panel, and 22 mm holes for 30 or 40 mm actuators
An HMI is clamped through a rectangular opening, and its maker fixes both the opening and the panel thickness it can grip. Pro-face's GP6000 Series opening sizes run from 156 × 123.5 mm for the 5-inch model to 301.5 × 227.5 mm for the 12-inch, all for panels 1.6 to 5 mm thick, with a tolerance of +1/−0 mm and corner radii of R3 mm or less. Below the screen, AutomationDirect's GCX 22 mm metal pushbuttons mount in 22 mm holes with 30 mm or 40 mm diameter actuators, are rated IP65 (IP40 for four illuminated models), and take contact blocks stacked up to three deep by two wide behind the panel; mushroom pushbuttons are rated for 300,000 operations. [2] Unused 22.5 mm openings can be closed with a plastic hole plug supplied with an O-ring, and E-stop mushroom buttons take an oversize yellow circular EMERGENCY STOP legend plate of 60 mm outside diameter. Editorial calculation: a 60 mm legend plate centred on a 22 mm hole extends 30 mm from the hole centre, so a neighbouring button with a 30 mm actuator (15 mm radius) needs its centre at least 30 + 15 = 45 mm from the E-stop centre for the two to clear; allow more for a gloved hand and for the panel cut-out edge.

nVent Hoffman's Syspend sanitary HMI enclosure S505015SS is 19.69 × 19.69 × 5.91 in in brushed SS304 for food and beverage washdown, listed to UL 508A and CSA as Type 4, 4X and 12 and to IEC 60529 as IP66 and IP69K. [3] Editorial calculation: 19.69 in × 25.4 = 500 mm and 5.91 in × 25.4 ≈ 150 mm.
Its shape is part of the specification: a 20-degree sloped top sheds water and cleaning solutions and stops objects being placed on it, a slanted flange trough collar stops fluid pooling along the top of the opening, the silicone gasket area is fully concealed, the hinges are shielded by the door, and the seams are continuously welded and ground smooth. [3] The box can be flipped for pendant or pedestal mounting, and its suspension-arm adapter can be fitted backwards to give a 40-degree tilt on a pedestal. [3]
The door closes on two stainless quarter-turn latches with flush slotted inserts and carries panel studs for optional NEMA-style panels; there is a bonding provision on the door and a grounding stud on the body, and a vent drain can be fitted on the flat area to remove condensed moisture. [3]
Editorial note: a sloped or tilted front changes the angle of the HMI and buttons to the operator; fix pedestal height and tilt together with the front layout, not after.
