Replacing an HMI display that has been discontinued · panel cutout and adapter plates, communication ports that disappear, screen resolution, carrying the existing project over, and mounting-compatible third-party panels
When the operator panel on a running machine is discontinued, the new one has to fit the hole in the cabinet door, talk to the same controller over the network that is actually there, show the existing screens at a resolution they were drawn for, and run the existing project with as little rework as possible. Specify those four things from the old panel before choosing the new one.

Rockwell Automation's migration guide 2711P-AP004F (April 2021) lists, for each PanelView Plus 6 terminal, the PanelView Plus 7 replacement, both cutouts, resolutions and the adapter plate. For the 10-inch size it names the PanelView Plus 7 Performance 10-inch terminal as "the primary replacement option for all PanelView Plus 6 1000 terminals", states that "Adapter Plates are necessary for drop-in replacement", and that "PanelView Plus 7 Performance terminals communication is only Ethernet." [1]
Rexel's Joe Amorese adds that "the products may require adapter plates as the cutout dimensions are not the same", that Rockwell "only offers adapter plates for their performance family", and that the cutout dimensions are published if the enclosure is to be modified instead. [2]
Editorial calculation from the guide's figures: the 10-inch keypad cutout narrows by 375 − 335 = 40 mm and the touch cutout by 305 − 269 = 36 mm, which is the gap the adapter plate has to close. [1]
Measure the existing cutout and door thickness, and note the gasket and the IP or NEMA rating the old panel gave, before ordering a replacement or adapter plate.

Communication ports, resolution and carrying the project over
Rexel notes that the PanelView Plus 6 "offered additional communication modules for DeviceNet, ControlNet, DH+, and DH485, and the Plus 7 only supports Ethernet/IP and Kepware server protocols or DF1 serial", leaving gateways from partners as the route for the older networks. [2] Rockwell's guide lists ControlNet, DH+ and DH-485 as add-on communication modules on PanelView Plus 6 and none on the Plus 7 terminals. [1]
Resolution changes with the panel: Rockwell's table moves the 10-inch keypad from 640 × 480 to 800 × 600, so existing screens have to be checked at the new size. [1]
A third route is a mounting-compatible panel from another maker. TR-Electronic's notion.S panels, for Siemens SIMATIC Comfort Panels TP1200 to TP2200, are described as "mechanically identical to previous Siemens models", with existing HMI projects remaining usable and engineering continuing in TIA Portal; TR-Electronic also states more than 10 years of supply. Record the old panel's model, firmware or software version, controller and network, and screen resolution; ask the supplier to state what in the project converts automatically and what needs rework.
