Size the boom reach to the vehicle and the load per metre

Unitel's TBC telescopic belt conveyor is a dual-boom extendable unit for docks and platforms that reaches to the end of vehicles and containers and carries boxes, cartons, sacks, crates and unit goods. Its data sheet lists a total retracted length of 5,700 mm and an overall extended length of 12,000 mm with two booms (three by special order), a loading capacity of 500 N/m, a linear speed of 25 m/min and a 2.2 kW motor on 380 V AC, 50 Hz, 3-phase supply. [1]

Kengic's TB series runs an 800 mm belt on every model, with a fixed segment of 6,000 mm on the TB26 and 7,600 mm on the TB37, TB47 and TB57. Telescopic lengths are 4,400, 10,600, 15,300 and 19,200 mm, giving longest overall lengths of 10,400 mm to 26,800 mm. Kengic lists cargo weight as ≤ 60 kg/m² (as printed), conveying speed ≤ 40 m/min, telescopic speed up to 40 m/min on the TB26 and 8–12 m/min (customisable) on the longer models, slope ±2.5° and running noise ≤ 78 dB. [2]

Editorial calculation: 500 N/m ÷ 9.81 m/s² ≈ 51 kg per metre of belt for the Unitel unit; the Kengic TB57 telescopes 19,200 ÷ 26,800 ≈ 72% of its longest overall length, against 6,300 ÷ 12,000 ≈ 53% for the Unitel TBC. [1] [2] Editorial note: measure the longest trailer or container body you load and the dock-to-door distance, then choose a retracted length that fits the dock and an extended length that reaches the front wall.

Give the supplier the longest vehicle or container body length, dock layout and door height, the heaviest and lightest case (weight and footprint), cases per hour, belt or roller surface, the conveyor it connects to at the rear, power supply, and whether it must also unload.

Set the nose height for the person loading

A University of Waterloo CRE-MSD ergonomic assessment of courier trailer loading found one worker transferring an average of 1,350 packages in an hour and a half, a lifting frequency of 18 lifts per minute, with packages of 1–35 kg, “the majority of the packages ranging from 1-9 kg,” stacked from the floor to 180 cm. Hand height at the conveyor was 103 cm vertical and 40 cm horizontal. [3]

The assessment states that the package locations fell outside the preferred lifting zone of 75 cm to 110 cm vertical height and 40 cm horizontal reach, and that at the observed frequency the maximum acceptable weight of lift from the Liberty Mutual (Snook) tables was 5 kg over shoulder height, 6 kg between knuckle and shoulder height and 7 kg below knuckle height. It notes that lifting at 15 lifts per minute or more causes fatigue without adequate recovery. [3]

Unitel's boom can be fitted with an optional hydraulic raising and lowering mechanism, giving an extended boom height from 1,100 mm to 2,400 mm, with a rear side height of 997 mm; a safety bar at the front stops boom advance when a person is in front of it. Kengic's units use a hydraulic system to adjust the inclination for connection to the truck. [1] [2] Editorial note: ask whether the nose can be lowered toward the floor tiers and raised for the top tiers, and whether a nose-mounted control panel and light are included.

Kengic prints its load limit as ≤ 60 kg/m² while Unitel gives 500 N/m, so ask each supplier for the load per metre at full extension. [1] [2]
