Technical details and manufacturing context for Supercapacitor

Definition
Supercapacitors, also known as electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs), are used in applications requiring high power density, long cycle life, and rapid energy capture/release, such as regenerative braking, UPS systems, and grid stabilization. They are specified by capacitance (F), voltage rating (V), equivalent series resistance (ESR), and energy/power density. Grades differ by electrode material (activated carbon, graphene, carbon nanotubes), electrolyte type (aqueous, organic, ionic liquid), and construction (cylindrical, pouch, module). Higher-grade devices offer lower ESR, higher operating temperature, and longer lifespan.
Working Principle
Supercapacitors store energy electrostatically via ion adsorption at the electrode-electrolyte interface, forming an electric double layer. No chemical reactions occur, enabling extremely fast charge/discharge and virtually unlimited cycle life. The capacitance is proportional to the electrode surface area and dielectric constant of the double layer, with nanoscale pores in carbon electrodes maximizing surface area.
Common Materials
Activated carbon, Graphene, Carbon nanotubes, Organic electrolyte (e.g., acetonitrile, propylene carbonate), Aluminum foil current collectors, Polymer separator (e.g., polypropylene), Aluminum or plastic casing
