A junction box encloses the point where cables are joined or terminated, protecting the connections from water, dust, impact and touch. The right box depends on where it is mounted and what it holds. Ask three things first: what environment and enclosure rating the location requires, what conductors, terminals and cable entries the box must take, and whether the area is classified as hazardous.

Hammond's 1554 series polycarbonate junction boxes are listed to UL/cUL 508 Type 4, 4X, 12 and 13, comply with NEMA 4, 4X, 12 and 13 and IEC 60529 IP66, and use polycarbonate with a UL94 V-0 flammability rating suitable for outdoor use, in light grey (RAL 7035). Hammond describes them for harsh industrial environments and outdoor controls, security or wireless equipment. [1]
FZOLINK lists its OL20A-W two-way in-line cable junction box at IP68, rated 250 V AC and 45 A, with PG9 cable entries and a nylon/PC body for power or signal connections outdoors. [2]
Editorial note: an IP or NEMA rating applies to the box as tested with its gasket and fittings; cable glands, breathers and drilled entries added later must carry the same rating or the assembly rating is lost.
Give the supplier the installation environment (indoor, outdoor, washdown, corrosive, UV), required IP code and NEMA/UL Type, material, size, number and size of cable entries and glands, what will be mounted inside (terminals, DIN rail, PCB), rated voltage and current for in-line types, hazardous-area zone and gas or dust group if any, temperature range and colour.

In the 1554 design the lid and mounting holes sit outside the gasket seal; the lid is secured with captive M4 stainless steel screws into integral stainless steel bushings for repeated opening; the gasket is preformed from high-temperature UL-listed silicone rubber with a two-piece tongue-and-groove lid against oil, dust and water; DIN rail mounting tabs are moulded in all sizes except the 1554CGY and 1554C2GY, and M3 brass inserts and PCB card guides in all but the smallest size; and optional 16-gauge galvanised steel inner panels are available. Sizes start at 65 × 65 × 25 mm (1554B2GY) and 90 × 90 × 45 mm (1554E2GY). [1]
CZ Electric lists explosion-proof terminal and junction boxes in Ex d and Ex e designs, in aluminium alloy and stainless steel, with certifications including ATEX and IECEx for gas zones 1 and 2 and dust zones 21 and 22. [3]
Editorial calculation: the 1554E2GY's 90 × 90 × 45 mm outside size is about 3.5 times the volume of the 65 × 65 × 25 mm 1554B2GY (364,500 ÷ 105,625 mm³), before wall thickness. [1]

Spelsberg's Abox junction box pages show the ratings a buyer can set beyond the IP code. The standard Abox range reaches IP66 with impact resistance IK07, uses soft TPE insertion membranes for fast cable entry on sizes Abox 025 to Abox 100, and is VDE and DLG certified. The Abox Pro version for unprotected outdoor use is rated IP66, IP67 and IP69 with impact resistance IK09, and carries DNV approval for use on ships. Variants come with push-in terminals for conductors up to 4 mm² or with high-set terminals. Spelsberg's junction box range runs from damp-location boxes to waterproof IP68 versions, and its WKE fire-protection junction boxes and distribution boards provide intrinsic electrical fire resistance of 30 to 90 minutes (E30 to E90) for circuits that must keep working in a fire. Editorial note: IP covers water and dust, IK covers impact, and E30 to E90 covers how long a circuit keeps working in a fire; the three are tested separately, so a box rated IP66 is not thereby rated for impact or fire. Write each rating you need into the order, with the terminal size, and check that glands and membranes keep the IP rating as fitted. Editorial calculation: an E90 rating is three times the 30 minutes of E30, so the choice follows the time a safety circuit must run in your fire strategy. [4] [6]
