A gantry machining center carries its spindle on a crossbeam supported by two columns, either over a fixed table (bridge type) or with the gantry itself traveling (gantry-mover type). The architecture keeps stiffness over very large envelopes, commonly 2 to 20 meters in X, making it the standard machine for mold bases, machine-tool beds, wind-energy parts, rail bogies, and aerospace structural components. Five-face heads, automatic head changers, and rotary tables extend capability, while thermal management and foundation design dominate achievable accuracy.
Working Principle
The workpiece stays fixed on a T-slot or grid table while the crossbeam and saddle position the ram-mounted spindle in X, Y, and Z through servo-driven ballscrews or rack-and-pinion drives with linear scales.
